ARTICLE 7: NATIONAL LEGISLATION

Article 7.1 and Article 4.2 are important mandates for States to ensure that their constitutions or equivalent legal frameworks, other legislation and laws, rules and regulations are in compliance with Article 18 of the ICCPR and the 1981 U.N. Declaration on Freedom of Religion or Belief. All States have legislation, rules and regulations in matters relating to religion or belief, but few of them are in total compliance with international standards. Monitors need to research and learn what national and local laws there are in their community before writing a Community Report on Freedom of Religion or Belief.
