Here are three hypothetical case studies to help you prepare your report
on cases in Section III of the Community Report on Freedom of Religion
or Belief. Review the studies and the instructions below and complete
your answers in the spaces provided on the worksheet.
- A family of three in your community was injured in an automobile
accident. The father and daughter were severely injured and unconscious
by the time they arrived in the hospital. The mother was seriously
injured, but fully conscious. At the hospital the woman announced
that her religion forbids her from receiving a blood transfusion and
that she does not wish that either her husband or child receive a blood
transfusion. The hospital has no reason to doubt the woman’s
sincerity. Are there any questions that need to be raised by your
article/paragraph in order to propose a solution? If so, explain.
- A private religious school in your community hires a woman to teach
mathematics. The teacher belongs to the same religious faith as those
who operate the school, although the hiring policies of the school
do not explicitly require teachers to be members of the faith. After
receiving a very successful job-performance evaluation at the completion
of her second year, she announces to school officials that she no longer
believes in the religious teaching of her faith and that she has become
an atheist the preceding year. She also says that she will not say
anything about her personal beliefs to the students, just as she had
said nothing to them the preceding year. The school immediately fires
the teacher. The teacher claims she has been discriminated against
based on religion or belief. Are there any questions that need to be
raised by your article/paragraph in order to propose a solution? If
so, explain.
- A religion in your community applies to the city government to build
a church or mosque in a residential neighborhood. The residents object
because the majority of the neighbors are not members of the religion
and it would cause noise and parking problems on the street where they
live. Are there any questions that need to be raised by your article/paragraph
in order to propose a solution? If so, explain.
Instructions: In the spaces below, or on a separate
sheet of paper, ask the questions for each of the three examples only
for the article/paragraphs for which you volunteered. Review the concept
model and method study topics before answering. Bring your answers to
the next classroom session for discussion on proposing a solution to
each community example using the 1981 U.N. Declaration as a paradigm.
